Mild dehydration affects mood
New research carried out at the University of Connecticut shows that mild dehydration can alter mood and perceived energy levels.
Two groups of young men and women completed a series of concentration and memory tests after mild dehydration was induced. This level of dehydration would not be expected to stimulate the thirst mechanism. The tests were then repeated when the participants were well hydrated.
For women, mild dehydration was found to contribute to headaches, fatigue and difficulty concentrating whilst men reported increased symptoms of tension, fatigue and anxiety.
These findings highlight the importance of being properly hydrated at all times, not just during exercise or in warm environments.
