Popular slimming diets low in nutrients
Few studies have analysed the micronutrient content of weight-loss diets, which may have implications for health. Now, the micronutrient intake of overweight/obese US women on four different popular slimming diets (i.e. Atkins, Zone, LEARN and Ornish) has been determined.
After eight weeks on these diets, it was found that energy intake decreased in all groups of women resulting in weight loss. However, intakes of key micronutrients, i.e. thiamin, folic acid, magnesium were inadequate in most of the diet groups. The authors concluded that weight-loss diets should consider integrating some carbohydrate and nutrient-dense foods to improve their overall nutrient profile. These women may otherwise be at risk of nutrient inadequacies.
