Vit D and calcium strengthen bones
It is well established that diets lacking in calcium and vitamin D can contribute to the development of osteoporosis. Now, a new study has tested whether a 30 month supplement and dietary intervention can help to improve bone density.
Sixty-six women (55-65yrs) were randomised to two groups: 1) Calcium/vitamin D supplements for 12 months followed by fortified foods for 18 months or 2) Control group not receiving any supplements or fortified foods.
Arm, spine and total bone mineral density were found to significantly improve in those taking the supplements/fortified foods. The authors concluded that intakes of 22.5µg per day vitamin D and 1200mg per day calcium can go some way to improving the bone density of women that have gone through the menopause. This may help to protect them against bone fractures later in life.
