Class differences in diet affect obesity risk
A new review paper has collated the results from 47 European papers which looked at the effects of socio-economic status on diet quality and body weight.
There was fairly strong evidence suggesting that individuals from socially disadvantaged groups were more likely to have higher intakes of total fat and lower intakes of dietary fibre and fruit/vegetables. This could partly explain poorer health and higher levels of obesity in people from lower socio-economic groups. More research is needed to study how meal patterns and beverage consumption varies between social classes.
