Oat breakfast reduces LDL and waist circumference

A new study has investigated whether eating a wholegrain ready-to-eat cereal helps to regulate cholesterol levels, and protect against the development of cardiovascular disease.

Overweight and obese adults were randomised to received two daily portions of either: 1) oats cereal containing 3g/day oat β glucan) or 2) a low-fibre control cereal. The results showed that total and LDL cholesterol reduced significantly in subjects eating the oat cereals compared with the controls. In addition, waist circumference in the oat group also reduced. It would appear that eating wholegrain cereals may help to promote weight loss and lower cardiovascular disease risk.
