New sugar review

A new review of the evidence linking sugar consumption with health has been published by dietitians, Carrie Ruxton, Elaine Gardner and Helene McNulty.

The paper, in the US journal Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition, systematically assessed high quality papers from 1995-2006 which evaluated the role of sugar consumption in weight control, dental health, diet quality and metabolic syndrome.

The results showed no significant adverse effect of sugars on body weight or metabolic syndrome, even at intakes up to 50% of dietary energy. Diet adequacy in adults and children was satisfactory across sugar intakes of 6-20% of dietary energy. There was no credible evidence linking sugar with attention-deficit disorder, dementia, or depression. Regarding dental health, a relationship was apparent between caries risk and sugar consumption but this disappeared when fluoride toothpaste was used and sugar was consumed less than five times a day.

In conclusion, there was no single health effect which justified limiting sugar consumption to 10% of energy, as advised by some expert bodies.
