Vitamin D and older people’s health
Vitamin D has been linked to ill health but few studies have accounted for additional factors that may influence vitamin D status (i.e. seasonal changes and age).
A new observational study has assessed vitamin D and health in 1471 older women (average age 74yr). It was found that, after adjusting for age and seasonal variation, low blood levels of vitamin D (defined as 25(OH)D <50nmol/l) were not associated with an increased risk of adverse health outcomes, such as stroke, CV disease or fractures. This contradicts previous reviews which have found correlations between a low vitamin D status and increased risk of disease. Clearly more research is needed to establish the role of vitamin D in maintaining health in later life.
